Boxing Injuries

Boxing is one of the toughest and most rewarding sports out there. Whether you train for competition, fitness, or simply as a recreational hobby, it’s an incredible way to build strength, endurance, and resilience.
But with the intensity of sparring, heavy bag work, and explosive movements, the body is placed under constant stress. Repetitive punches, fast footwork, and defensive movements can often lead to a variety of common injuries.
At MCR Physiotherapy, we work with boxers of all levels, from beginners to seasoned fighters, helping them recover from injury, improve mobility, and prevent future setbacks. Below are some of the most frequent boxing-related injuries we see in the clinic and support our clients through every week.

Common Injuries
Associated With Boxing

Common boxing injuries body map

Concussion

Caused by blows to the head that make the brain move suddenly inside the skull. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, confusion, and blurred vision. Recognising it early and seeking the right care is essential.

Neck Pain / Upper Trapezius

Acute trauma and repetitive strain can lead to neck pain or injury. The neck and upper trapezius become very tight and stiff due to the repetitive defensive and offensive actions in boxing.

Shoulder Instability

Happens when the shoulder becomes loose or unstable from repeated punches, overextension, or previous dislocations. Boxers may feel weakness, slipping, or the shoulder "giving way" during training.

Shoulder Impingement

A common overuse injury where shoulder tendons become pinched from repetitive punching and overhead movements, leading to pain, weakness, and reduced range of motion.

Shoulder Pain

Very common in boxers, caused by repetitive punching and heavy bag work. Can stem from muscle strain, tendon irritation, or joint overload, leading to discomfort and reduced power output.

Bicep Tear

Occurs when bicep muscle fibres or tendons are overstretched or torn during powerful punches, clinch work, or explosive movements where the arm is forced beyond its limit. Can be partial or complete.

Boxer's Elbow

Pain and inflammation around the elbow joint caused by repetitive stress from punching, heavy bag work, and pad sessions. Not a single condition — it covers several elbow problems common in boxing.

Wrist / Carpal Injuries

The carpal bones are commonly injured in boxing due to repetitive punch impact. Injuries include sprains, fractures, or tendon irritation causing pain, swelling, and reduced grip strength.

Boxer's Fracture

One of the most common hand injuries in combat sports — a break in the metacarpal bones, usually the 4th or 5th, just below the knuckles of the ring or little finger, typically from a poorly supported punch.
